I'm kinda new to the manual trans in this considering mine was just swapped from an auto. I went to Rock Falls today and couldn't even force it into second or fourth. I was told since it wasn't grinding that it was the linkage. Plus the shifter is really tough and sticking. Any ideas of what to replace. Please respond quickly as I only have three days off to get this done. If anyone has free time to help let me know. I appreciate anything you can do.
I'm not the MN ZX3 w/ Cali plates anymore.

You broke one of your shifter cables is my guess. Can you still shift into gears by messing with the linkage itself (on top of trans, its the white box). My guess is you pulled a zurno though....

This is an easy fix. All that is wrong is that your cables need adjusting.
1. Pull the center counsel. I can't recall what or where it attaches too. You want it out so you can see where the shifter centers and if the "clamps" have come loose.
2. "Center" the shifter (neutral, and should be directly between 3rd and 4th)
3. Open the hood and remove any/all obstructions above the tranny (air box mostly)
4. Look on the back side of the tranny, you should be able to see 2 conectors that push onto the shift linkage pins. If you cannot see them move the weight and watch, you should see them move. The one closer to the drivers side is for gear selection, the one to the pass. side is up and down (pull the white cover and you'll understand)
5. Reach back there and push the orange/red button in, it should stay in place, if it does not stay buy new ones from Ford. You should be able to move the cable back and forth now (use a little lightweight oil if need be).
6. Slide the weight to the pass. side and pull the cable tight into the connector, unlock the tab and let the orange/reb button up.
7. Go into the car and test the shift feel. If it still does not feel quite right readjust the cable.
The manual says to do it a little different, but I have not had luck with there way. The "up/down" adjustment is done in about the same manner.
As long as you are in the area it is a good time to use some compressed air to clean all the debris from the linkage plate (under the white cover). Use something to plug the hole where the vent is, you do not want crap getting down there.
I'll get some pictures of the process if need be.
