Greetings.
Im in the market for a Focus, but have a few questions.
What are the main differences between the Zetec and the Duratech? Were both engines offered in the Focus? Were they available in different years?
Ive been reading a few things here and there on the interweb and am getting confused as to what was in what and what years.
Thanks for the help.
Also, if there is anything else you think I should know before venturing out to the Focus market, please let me know.
Duratec // Zetec?
Duratec replaces Zetec that we've been using since focus 2000 - 2004. beginning 2005 Focus comes with Duratec only. I believe the output power is close to the same but the duratec has more potential from what i read. There are 2 variance of duratec available here 2.0 and 2.3. 2.3 only available in ST version and the rest of the models carry 2.0.
specifically i dont know whats the difference but i believe there are some changes in the internal design, materials. please correct me if i'm wrong folks! other than that it should answer some of your questions and welcome to the site btw!

Zetec has a million more times aftermarket capability at the time. The 2.3 duratec makes a bit more power than the 2.0 zetec, but overall stock to stock there isn't THAT much difference.
If you are looking for a car, the guy who is supposed to buy mine may be having some problems getting money, so look in the For Sale section at my thread if you are looking for a nice focus.

yeah you can get a 2.3 duratec from late 03 up to 04 in the old body style but I have only seen them in all white hatchs, dont know why. it came with 140 hp and 140 tq. I have been lucky enoughf to own both the zetec and the duratec. and as for the zetec there is a boat load of parts from lots of differnt companies. so parts can go for chap like on ebay or be high as hell from big name companies like focus sport or aem or cosworth. and as for the duratec there is just about the same amount of Performance parts out for the duratec as the zetec now, but there are no cheap parts you can get. and most you can only get from cosworth ,focus sport and F2 focus Performance makes some stuff too. as for the duratec they come in a 2.0 with 130 hp and 129tq and then there is the 2.3 with 151hp and 154tq. as for me i like the duratec better. they are a little harder to work on then the zetec. and i have the 2.3 ST. its a little bit faster out the box than the svt zetec and alot faster then the zetec. but one thing the duratecs that ford has in there cars does not have is Variable valve timing. the zetecs have this. thats all i could think of right now and i think thats enoughf of my bs for today lol

so that is why the 05+ duratecs have less power and less fuel economy than mazda

the mod parts are ten times the price of the zetec for the duratech. the zetec has alot more mods for it than the duratec. and on a side not the 2005 focus's have redesigned bodys and some interior is redesigned so interchangable parts are hard to come by.

Thanks for all of the replies.
Im looking mainly for a DD, so the performance aspect isnt a big selling point.
Is there anything out there worth knowing as far as reliability? Is one better than the other?
If a person is looking for a used Focus, should they stay away from the 00s due to the recalls?
Thanks again.

Personally I would stay away from 2000's. For the most part they are fine, but some have some issues.
Both engines are insanely reliable.
Only thing to really even put major wear on the car and it's reliability is forced induction. Zetec's go WELL past 150k (and even higher), both engines are still being run to see how many miles they will take.
viewtopic.php?t=1783 - Take a look. This has been my daily driver the entire time I've owned it. Mechanic owned. Fresh motor, I guarantee the car won't give anyone any major problems.

- Very sharp looking car. Problem is that it is more car than I need and more money than I can spend.

- How is western WI treating you? I live in Eau Claire and work in Altoona.
Does anyone have a list of the recalls for the 2000s? And is there any way to get information as to whether or not they were preformed off of a VIN?
Thanks again!
