ok the duratecs run on coils, not spark plugs, but i have seen conversion kits to make the duratec run on plugs, is this a good idea, what is more reliable?

You mean they run coil packs not "distributors" ALL gasoline based engines run spark plugs, diesle's run glow plugs, but anyways I think you are hugely mistaken here, you DO have plugs, you just have a coil pack, you can get upgraded coil packs, or double spark or higher spark ignition box's that run in conjuction with your setup, but honestly its not needed at all.

if you have a 2.3 duratec, the biggest gains you can get out of that engine are things like larger throttle body, intake, cam, exhaust header and cat back exaust, those things alone will give you a huge butt dyno gain. the 2.3 is known for having very restrictive intake system, a TB, intake alone will make a huge difference, alot more than an upgraded coil pack will give you.

ok now i know what you are talking about, it was something that i was talking about to someone at ford before. I asked about sparkplug wires and he said they dont make them for the focus cuz they run coils. now i know what u mean by that but is it still true they dont run plug wires? and if not why would they make a coversion so that you can?

nope not true, they still run wires.

Some fords like the F-150 run a setup where the wires a built into the intake manifold, its kind of fucked up, not sure exactly how it works but my mom just had a tune up on her truck and they had to take the mani off to do the plugs, huge as job just for plugs.

have you actually looked under your hood? how can you NOT see the wires going to the plugs????

The duratecs run individual coils per plug. Where as the zetec runs plug wires back to a coil pack. Individual coils are a better overall design. There is no point in switching to older technology, who ever made a conversion did it to try to get money off of uninformed people.

They are starting to make the individiual coil conversion for the zetec which actually looks quite promising.

ok that makes more sense, i was just wondering cuz if you have seen under the hood of the duratecs they look shitty with the wires going to the coil packs. but its all making more sense now. thanks

what!!!!! some ones feeding your mom a line of bull shit!!!. the 97-04 heritege f150 and the 04-current only differ in the head design, the cop design is a coil with a long boot with spring inside. they are same style cop as they were in 00 when they switched to them. if they took the mani off its cus the 1. broke something . 2. replaced orings. 3. dropped a tool down it. 4. had a dumb shit newby asset student workin on it :lol:

have you been drinkin with zurno tonight? :lol: yeah the dur tecks look a little cluttered. they make and its not hard to make your own, engine cover. i have never in my life seen a ignition upgrade alone make more horse and tourqe power. the higher spark energy is to jump a larger gap at the plug and alow for higher cyl pres. ( it keeps the spark from being blown out by boost or N.O.S) in stock form your ignition is good till you pump some nasty boost pressures in there!! :twisted: ( any thing over 10psi) :twisted:

well i don't know the exact logistics of it, I havn't looked at her truck personally, I am just giong off of what my dad told me. BTW our family mechanic work for the city of edina, fixing everything from sqad cars to plow trucks, has been doing it for 30+ years now, since he was 16, has his own personal service business out of his garage, that btw makes anything any one of us (even Davis's garage) look weak.

so either way, all I know is to change the plugs on a 99 F150 takes alot more time becuase of teh fucked up way they designed the setup.

well sorta most say you have to remove the fuel rail but i have a specail way of getting around that( the pulse dampner is in the way of a bolt for the coil) ive done about 400 tune ups on the ford modular v8 in vans, trucks cars, i too have also been a heavy tech at tousleys fleet shop, in my life i have never needed to remove a mani for a tune up, unless i have broke some thing like a coil bolt or a fuel rail bolt. im sure this guy is a super star tech, but to me it dont seem right, id tell my custmer that hay shit happens and i had to fix my screw up. relise that you give me your car and leave, i have it all day, if i need it more than a day, the first thing i hear is how much is it gonna coast me, i say nothing and walla i have your car for as long as i need, i could do any thing to it and you would never know!!! so to me from what you said, it sounds like some ones getting fed some shit. :wink: im sorry i will not take this any further. its not right of me to post jack, im sorry. :oops:

coilpacks are d-tec.
no plug wires.
gives you a more direct spark.
= w00t

but

the valve cover of these damned cars is ugly as sin. I was severely disapointed at the extreme bland flavor under the hood. makes me want to die.
