ghetto mod and stupid question

so my friend with a focus took his airbox off and put a cone filter on. is that a stupid idea? it sounds nice, and you can tell his pulls a little harder than mine. is this sucking hot air in because its near the engine?

Its not going to hurt it. I ran mine for acouple weeks like that. I just mounted a DryFlow AEM onto the MAFS...then I grew up and put on a decent intake...

No different than a short ram, CAI is better but anything to free up airflow.
