Legal Window Tint Question, VERY confused

I am really confused. Hopefully you guys can help me understand this better.

I am going to get my windows tinted by Dark Dan this weekend. Upon talking with Dan, he tells me the legal tint is 50% on ALL indows except the windshield. I asked him for clarification..."what if I did the front sides at 50% and the rest at 35%? He told me that would be illegal. He is so sure about that, that he only carries 50% in the reflective tint, so that is the darkest I could go on all windows. He carries other tint shades in the other tint films, but told me if I go darker than 50% on any of the windows it would be illegal.

I am confused. Don't they sell cars brand new with dark windows in the back and 50% in the front? Are they selling cars with illegal tint? I thought we could have "cargo space tint"... Is he wrong as a tinting professional?

I would say he is wrong. If I'm not mistaking the legal tint in Minnesota is 35% thats what i have on front windows and 20% in the back. No tint on my windshield. I would double check but I'm pretty sure thats what it is.

Turns out legal tint is 50% so he is right. But honestly i have never had a problem with my tint or blacking out my tail lights. Police have better things to worry about but be careful because if you get pulled over they can add them on.

I had 30% on, got pulled over for a dirty license plate (no I'm not joking) and they gave me a fix it ticket for my tint. I don't have tint anymore. Cops see a riced out car they are watching you immediately for anything they can get you on.

Cars "Sedans" can only have 50% on all windows. Vans, SUV's, and wagons can have as dark as they want in the back windows but have no darker then 50% front windows. Most cars come 75% tinted already. So if you get 50% window tint your going to be illegal you'll be at about 40%...

I had gotten a ticket a while back and the trooper showed me the reading was at 13.5% and I told him I put 25%-30% and he explained to me why it read the way it did.

So no matter if you tint your windows or not it just depends how the police officer is feeling that way towards you that day. In my case when I got my ticket it was really dark and you could not see in my car at all at that time, So i took that ticket without complaining. All in the end a Police officer is just doing there daily job just like everyboby else is......

Patalrob cleared it up. 50% on sedans is the legal limit. Thank you. that makes sense b/c I don't technically have cargo space like a wagon or SUV would.

50% is legal but I've got 35% all round on mine and have had no issues. I've also got tinted tails but they aren't black so they're still okay.

Mine still reflect light at night with the lights off from over a block away and the light shows through just fine as well.

As much as I like the tint look, I'm going to skip it myself just so i don't have to bother with the cop thing, cause I tend to agree that it makes you a target.

I think mine are all around 50% and I have yet to be pulled over for anything. My tails and markers are so black I doubt they reflect anything either, but I left the third brake light untinted for safety.

so does anyone have anyway to tell exactly what % tint the 04 SVT comes stock with?! i would like to match the front windows (- the windsheild) to the rear windows...
