Since I first owned this car the oil level after a ‘proper’ oil change has always been (approx. 1/8” - 3/16”) above the full mark. This car is a PIT(neck) to change the filter without a hoist, so here is how I do it:
1) Jack up the passenger side of the car (yes, I also use jack stands).
2) Remove oil filter and install a new filter (same results with the original Ford filter & WIX equivalent).
3) Lower the car to its normal stance (on the garage floor).
4) Drain the pan.
5) Open the oil cap to facilitate draining and let it drain about 15 minutes or so.
I then CAREFULLY add 4½ quarts of Mobil 1 5W-30 oil – no more, no less. In the few times that I have had the dealer change the oil, I get the same results.
I always check the oil after the car has set (in a level garage) overnight.
Okay, so I am doing everything right , and I can accept that the oil level might read a bit high on the dipstick. But how about this: The oil level actually goes UP between changes (4000 miles)! Now, before you have suggestions re: coolant leaks and such, consider this: I have a lab perform oil analysis (Blackstone Labs), and there is zero coolant in my oil. No fuel either. Pretty weird, huh?

Thanks, Steve. That was a REALLY helpful response! Maybe I should hook up with one of those guys who claims to have invented the 200 MPG car. Wow! Think about it! A car that gets phenomenal gas mileage AND produces oil. How good is that!

I think it isn't just your driveway that's a little off-kilter!

Let's try an experiment: Drain all of the oil before installing the new filter next time. I never have the issue you are experiencing, however I don't measure my oil with anything other than the dipstick. I buy 5 qt. jugs and eyeball 4.25 quarts and then top it off as needed.
Those motors seem to drain down really, really slow. I put in just enough so that it's in the safe zone. Then let it sit overnight and add to full level slowly.
its the boost maker mah chine. your rings are weak sause'es. its pushing fuel and combustion into the oilpan!!!!!!!! knock it off fer ya blew the dern thing ta smitherings

Uh, where did you get the "4.25 quart" thing? The manual says 4.5 quarts.

You punks are too young to know this, but early VW Beetles did not have gas gauges. Long ago in a galaxy far away when I worked at Hamms Brewery, there was a guy with a Beetle who constantly bragged about the good gas mileage he got. His co-workers decided to mess with his head. They would alternately siphon out gas, or add gas. The guy's 'mileage' went from awful to exceptional and back to awful. I don't know if the Beetle guy ever figured out what happened!
I'm pretty sure all of those guys are dead now, so I can't blame them.
